Maritime and Coastguard New Zealand are concerned about the increasing number of drownings from boating accidents. Two-thirds of New Zealand drownings could have been avoided if the boatie had been wearing a lifejacket and carrying forms of waterproof communication.
There are also problems with the driving of boats and a variety of craft on the water. Boat users are not following the speed limits and do not follow the give-way rules. This is causing more accidents than necessary. Water and boating is a huge part of many New Zealanders lives and Maritime and Coastguard NZ want everyone to know the rules and follow safety recommendations.
